Depression comes in many different forms (read about them in 'Clinical depression'), all of which affect both your thoughts and feelings.

Perhaps you already know why your thoughts and feelings are affected. If so, you'll also know why you feel so down.

You may also be overwhelmed by despondency and helplessness without understanding why.

When you are depressed there are changes to both your body and soul. Perhaps you became depressed because you are genetically and biologically predisposed to the illness. Alternatively, you may have been subjected to severe strain.

When you are stressed or under strain a number of biological and chemical changes take place in the brain and these can trigger depression.

The most important

Irrespective of the cause of your depression, the most important things are:

  • How do you see things?
  • How do you think?

The answers to these questions are tied up with your thoughts and feelings. It is these thoughts and feelings that can help you to make things better.
