The hardest thing about depression is that you may not realize that you are ill and you may think that there is something wrong with you as a person rather than that you are suffering from the symptoms of depression.
The people you live and work with may not know that you are ill and therefore distance themselves from you as a person rather than understanding why you are irritable and hard to communicate with. Many people suffer for a long time before they actually discover that they are depressed.
The hardest thing about depression
One of the hardest things about depression is feeling so down and anxious that you can't see a way out of the situation. You feel helpless and it may seem as though life is not worth living - you can't see how things can get better.
Depression must be treated as quickly as possible.
The best treatment is a combination of antidepressants and psychotherapy.
Melancholy or depression?
It can be hard to distinguish between normal feelings of melancholy and depression.
It is completely normal for bad things to trigger strong feelings, hopelessness and helplessness. Feelings prompted by normal crises pass quickly. When you are not depressed you can see how your negative feelings relate to your problems and thoughts; you can find an explanation and do something about it.
In the case of depression, the feelings remain painful until the illness gets better.
