Feelings of guilt

If we don't know about depression or think of it, we are likely to misinterpret behaviour. We might think the depressed person is irritable or angry with us. This may be partially true but usually it is not because we have done something wrong, many times the depressed person is unable to deal with their illness and may lash out at those close to him or her.

It isn't unusual for people who are depressed to feel guilty about the way they are behaving and about the way they feel. It isn't unusual for family and friends to think that they may somehow be responsible of the other person's mood.

You are not to blame for your relative/friends depression. Neither are they. It is an illness and no one is at fault.

It doesn't really matter where the depression came from. What matters is what is done about it.

If someone near you tries to or does commit suicide, you might automatically think it's your fault. It's not. Just as you weren't to blame for the depression, you're not to blame for an attempted or completed suicide. You are not guilty.
