If the depressed person in your family has suffered from depression before, then you, others and that person can draw on that experience.

The following changes in behaviour point to depression:

  • Reduced liveliness (they seem to 'lose their spark')
  • Greater contemplation (they may begin to question 'life, the universe and everything')
  • A sudden lack of initiative
  • Complaints about sleeping problems
  • Anxiety - depression is the most common cause of anxiety
  • Lower self-esteem
  • Signs of a lack of pleasure from daily life, and a tendency to think constantly "What's the point?"

A note to the "care giver"

Caring for a depressed person is exhausting both emotionally and sometimes physically. It is important to remember to take care of yourself as well. Although it is useful to encourage your depressed family member/friend there is no need to feel guilty if you are tired of constantly trying to boost their self-esteem and morale. You may need to consider additional support for yourself.
